Joining the Union

One goal I have had for years is to join the makeup union. After I finished working on the film for Netflix I decided to make it a reality. The makeup union in my region is Local 798 . Being a member of the union means that you are able to work on union TV shows, films, commercials, and theater. Which are usually the bigger budget productions that are nominated for awards. In addition to getting to work on bigger projects, you can qualify for great medical, annuity, and pension benefits in addition to many discounts available to union members. In order to join the union, there is a list of requirements. Your application must have-

  • a cover letter

  • resume

  • proof of 18 months of residency in 798 jurisdiction

  • Copy of license and education

  • 3 Reference Letters from people within the entertainment industry

  • Proof of 180 days of paid work

Once your application is verified and accepted the next step is an interview. During your interview you must submit a portfolio and you are interviewed by the membership committee. After the interview they will decide if you are granted membership into Local 798. If you pass the interview process the next step is an orientation which you must take to join. The final step is the one time initiation fee of $3,500.

I completed all of the steps and officially became a member of Local 798 Makeup and Hair Union in January 2021.
